Geopolitical Futures 2025

With about half the world’s population going to the polls, 2024 proved to be a “super year for [national] elections.” Incumbent parties (almost 40 percent) faced significant voter repudiation and/or a defining shift in power for legislative solutions, leading to a global shift in values and an increase in populist policies. At least 10 of these changed or had a notable shift towards right-leaning parties* and 11 moved leftward**. While exact number varies based on criteria used, there are some 28 countries globally where rightwing parties are in power or have significant influence of the legislation. The outcomes of the United States election contribute to this collective transformation of the global political landscape, moving it from a rules-based world order to a power-based world order.
